Comprehensive Odor Reduction Measures Implemented ... Targeting 70% Reduction in Odor Complaints Compared to 2023
Enhancing Odor Management Capabilities and Minimizing Blind Spots through 12 Projects in 5 Sectors
Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) is implementing a "Comprehensive Odor Reduction Plan" to create a pleasant living environment.
The plan will be carried out over three years starting in the second half of this year. It includes 12 projects targeting five major sources of odor (sewer, waste, septic tanks, private businesses, etc.), with a budget of 5.7 billion KRW allocated until 2026. The goal is to reduce the number of odor complaints by 70% compared to 2023.
In 2023, a total of 357 odor complaints were received in Dongdaemun-gu. By source (location), there were ▲210 from sewers ▲50 from septic tanks ▲21 from waste ▲76 from other sources.
According to the comprehensive plan, the district will form a "Living Odor Response Team" to respond organically to complaints. To address the structural problems causing most sewer odors, facility investments such as ▲installation of odor-blocking devices in manholes and storm drains ▲dredging and cleaning of sewer facilities will be carried out.
Additionally, systematic maintenance across the public sector will be implemented, including ▲operation of food waste container cleaning vehicles for apartment complexes ▲expansion of distribution of Effective Microorganisms (EM) fermentation liquid ▲enhanced cleanliness management of public facilities such as Hwikyung cleaning garages and public restrooms ▲installation of odor reduction facilities for septic tanks.
For private businesses such as restaurants and painting facilities, support will be provided to enable voluntary management through ▲facility improvement loan support ▲attachment of Internet of Things (IoT) measuring devices ▲technical support for operation of odor prevention facilities.
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, "Since living odors arise from various causes, interdepartmental cooperation is more important than anything else. We will enhance the district’s ability to resolve complaints centered on this three-year comprehensive odor reduction plan."
