Mapo-gu, Joint Public-Private Special Inspection on Safety Hazards in News Reports from June 24 to July 22
Park Gang-su, Mapo-gu Mayor: "Unpredictable Abnormal Climate, Pre-Inspection and Safety Awareness Are the Best Measures"
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) is conducting a special inspection until the 22nd to prevent safety accidents caused by sidewalk subsidence and damage during the rainy season, as this year is expected to have more rainfall than usual.
The inspection targets a total of 132.5 km of sidewalks, including 80.2 km of city roads and 52.3 km of district roads. Seven members of the road excavation supervision team and 22 private volunteer street monitoring members are inspecting together with the district inspection teams (3 groups).
The inspection focuses especially on heavily trafficked crosswalks, subway station entrances, bus stop areas, and other multi-use locations.
Additionally, sidewalks around structures such as subway ventilation shafts and distribution board bases, as well as sidewalk (excavation) construction sections, will be thoroughly inspected.
The inspection items include checking for sidewalk block ▲subsidence ▲damage ▲voids ▲uplift (lifting) ▲and damage to sidewalk curbs and bollards (vehicle access prevention posts).
After the inspection, the district’s road maintenance team will immediately repair any urgent issues, while minor issues will be repaired sequentially.
A district official stated, “During the rainy season, soil erosion caused by rain can lead to sidewalk subsidence or damage,” adding, “We will prevent safety accidents through rainy season sidewalk inspections and promptly restore sidewalks.”
Since the special inspection began on June 24, the district has identified and completed restoration for a total of 152 cases, including sidewalk block damage, subsidence, and damage to curbs and bollards.
Even after the special inspection ends, the district plans to operate the street monitoring team continuously to promptly inspect and maintain sidewalk paving risk factors.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “In increasingly difficult weather forecasting situations, thorough preparation and safety awareness are the most important,” and added, “We will do our best to manage a safe urban infrastructure so that residents can enjoy their daily lives with peace of mind 365 days a year, prioritizing their safety.”
