"I felt it rattling in my body. I intuitively understood that this is where I need to reduce my speed."

Songpa-gu (District Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that it has installed the nation's first 'dot-patterned anti-slip pavement' in 10 children's protection zones within the district to help drivers immediately recognize these zones and enhance children's traffic safety.

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, explained, "With the recent increase in unfortunate traffic accidents within children's protection zones, a red light has been lit for the safety of vulnerable pedestrians. Therefore, Songpa-gu plans to manage these zones more safely by installing 'dot-patterned pavement' that induces safe driving through vehicle vibrations."

The district devised a plan to effectively alert drivers that "the children's protection zone starts here" by introducing 'dot-patterned anti-slip pavement' at the entry points of protection zones. This was implemented for the first time nationwide in 10 children's protection zones around elementary schools such as Jamhyeon Elementary School.

The newly installed 'dot-patterned anti-slip pavement' is applied in a 3-meter section of the road surface near the start of the children's protection zone in the form of dot-shaped bumps, allowing drivers to physically feel the vehicle vibrations when entering the zone.

One driver who actually drove over the pavement after installation said, "As I passed through the alley, I suddenly felt a rattling sensation and immediately thought I should reduce my speed. I could instantly recognize that the children's protection zone had started," praising the introduction of the dot-patterned pavement.

The district plans to expand the installation not only to children's protection zones but to all protection zones in the area through continuous monitoring. Currently, Songpa-gu has designated a total of 118 protection zones: 98 for children, 18 for the elderly, and 2 for the disabled.

Mayor Seo Gang-seok of Songpa-gu stated, "'Dot-patterned pavement' is the first of its kind introduced by Songpa-gu nationwide, and we expect it to have a ripple effect on other cities and provinces by promoting safe driving within protection zones. Creating a safe traffic environment for children requires everyone's attention and effort. Songpa-gu will take the lead in protecting children's traffic safety."
