Gyeonggi Marine Fisheries Resources Research Institute to Release 10,000 'Saejogae' Clams for Trial on the 16th

Gyeonggi Marine Fisheries Resources Research Institute to Release 10,000 'Saejogae' Clams for Trial on the 16th Young ark clams released on the 16th by the Gyeonggi-do Marine Fisheries Resources Research Institute

Gyeonggi Province will conduct a trial release of 10,000 juvenile saw-tooth clams to increase fishermen's income.

The Gyeonggi Marine Fisheries Resources Research Institute announced on the 16th that it will release 10,000 juvenile saw-tooth clams into the tidal flats of Dorido, Hwaseong City, marking the first trial release in Gyeonggi Province.

After first discovering saw-tooth clams in the tidal flats of Dorido, Hwaseong City last year, the institute conducted habitat surveys. Starting this year, it began experimental research on artificial seed production to increase saw-tooth clam resources.

The saw-tooth clam is named for its resemblance to a bird's beak and is characterized by its large size, thick shell, and chewy texture. It was previously only caught in tidal flats south of Chungcheong Province in Korea, but due to climate change, its habitat has expanded northward to the tidal flats of Gyeonggi Province, according to the institute.

The 10,000 juvenile saw-tooth clams being released this time were artificially hatched by the institute in April and reared for three months. They measure 1 to 2 cm in size and have passed aquatic animal disease inspections prior to release.

Kim Seong-gon, director of the Gyeonggi Marine Fisheries Resources Research Institute, stated, "We will continue to discover new valuable marine resources emerging in response to environmental changes and strive to increase the income of fishermen in Gyeonggi Province."
