The photo is taken from an angle looking up at former President Trump from below the podium. Surrounded by bodyguards, Trump raises his right arm with a clenched fist, wearing a determined expression. Blood is flowing from his right ear, injured by a bullet grazing it, and the American flag flutters behind him.
The photo is presumed to have been taken during the process of Trump leaving the scene to evacuate after being wounded in the shooting. Around 6:11 p.m. that day at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump, who was giving a speech, ducked below the podium while covering his right ear when gunshots were heard.
Afterwards, supported by nearby bodyguards who rushed to him, Trump stood up and raised his arm with a clenched fist toward his supporters, shouting "Fight" three times.
Videos shared in foreign media of the incident show some photographers running toward the podium as the gunshots rang out. Evan Vucci appears to have taken the photo during this moment.
The photo is being praised for properly capturing Trump's heroic image. There are already predictions that it has "reserved the Pulitzer Prize for this year."
The fact that Evan Vucci, who took the photo, is an actual Pulitzer Prize winner has drawn even more attention. Vucci won the Pulitzer Prize for his photography covering the protests following the death of George Floyd in Washington, D.C., in 2021.
