It was reported on the 12th that Kim, a man in his 60s who was sentenced to 15 years in prison in the first trial for stabbing former Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung with a weapon, has filed an appeal with the court.
According to the legal community on the day, Kim and his lawyer submitted an appeal to the Busan District Court, dissatisfied with the first trial verdict. The reason for the appeal is the unfairness of the sentencing.
The Criminal Division 6 of the Busan District Court (Chief Judge Kim Yong-gyun) sentenced Kim, who was indicted on charges including attempted murder, to 15 years in prison on the 5th, calling it "a serious challenge and attempt to destroy the electoral system and representative democracy."
The prosecution viewed the crime as a thoroughly planned offense, noting that Kim had sharpened and modified the weapon he purchased online for several months before the crime. During the trial, when asked by the prosecutor, "Do you mean you felt frustrated after realizing you failed to kill?" he answered, "Yes."
Although he expressed remorse to "the natural person Lee Jae-myung" only during his final argument, the court pointed out, "Considering his attitude in court, it is questionable whether this can be seen as sincere remorse."
Earlier, the prosecution, which had sought a 20-year prison sentence for Kim, also appealed on the 8th, judging that the difference between the sentence and the prosecution's demand, as well as the dismissal of the electronic monitoring order request for Kim, were unfair.
