Reading and Writing Instruction for Children with Dyslexia and Borderline Intelligence
The Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Rehabilitation at Tongmyong University (President: Jeon Ho-hwan, Department Chair: Oh Sojeong) conducted the "Basic Literacy Instruction Course for Reading and Writing for Children with Dyslexia and Borderline Intelligence" at the main auditorium of the Central Library from the 1st to the 7th.
This course is part of Tongmyong University's local university revitalization project, the "TU Challenge Program."
Approximately 70 participants attended the course, including undergraduates and graduate students from the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Rehabilitation, the Department of Early Childhood Education, and the Department of Clinical Counseling Psychology at the College of Health, Welfare, and Education, as well as alumni from related departments and practicing speech-language pathologists.
The lectures covered theoretical topics such as language and reading, stages of reading and writing development, intellectual disabilities and borderline intelligence, and characteristics of dyslexia. The course also included practical content to build real-world skills, such as assessment and instructional methods for reading and writing by disability type, specific spelling strategies, reading fluency, and reading comprehension instruction.
Professor Kim Giju of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Rehabilitation at Tongmyong University, who served as the lead instructor, said, "This course provided in-depth education on language rehabilitation for school-age communication disorders and learning disabilities for current students, and offered an opportunity for students in related fields to explore integrative approaches. It was also a valuable time for alumni and practicing speech-language pathologists to re-recognize the importance of comprehensive assessment and in-depth interpretation of the causes of reading and writing difficulties, as well as to explore intervention strategies for each case."
Kim Hyejeong, director of the Aria Children's Psychological Development Center and a first graduate of the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at Tongmyong University, said, "Recently, there has been an increase in children with reading problems or related learning issues in the field, such as those supported by the Basic Academic Achievement Support Project, so this course was especially beneficial."
The Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Rehabilitation at Tongmyong University is one of only five departments nationwide that offers a curriculum enabling students to obtain both speech-language pathologist and audiologist certifications. Since March 2024, the department changed its name to "Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Rehabilitation" and has been operating its curriculum with a focus on clinical rehabilitation. In addition, a master's program was newly established this year.
The Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Rehabilitation at Dongmyung University is conducting a special lecture on the Basic Literacy Instruction Course.
