Actor Shelley Duvall, who became widely known to the public through director Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining, has passed away at the age of 75.
On the 11th (local time), foreign media such as BBC and CNN reported that Shelley Duvall died from complications related to diabetes in her hometown of Texas.
Director Dan Gilroy, Shelley Duvall's partner, announced her death, saying, "My lovely, kind, and wonderful life partner and friend passed away last night. She endured so much pain recently, but now she is free. I hope you soar high, beautiful Shelley."
Shelley Duvall made her debut in Robert Altman's Brewster McCloud (1970). She then appeared in Altman's works such as McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) and Brewster McCloud (1974), gaining recognition from the public.
She gained attention for her role as Joan in the 1975 film Nashville, and in 1977, she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for Altman's 3 Women and was nominated for the British Academy Film Awards, establishing herself as a skilled actress.

Three years later, in 1980, Duvall successfully transformed her character by playing Olive Oyl opposite Robin Williams in the musical film Popeye. In the same year, she delivered a memorable performance as Wendy Torrance, the wife of the protagonist Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), in Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece The Shining (1980).
In Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits (1981), she played Fancy, a lover with a fateful connection to Michael Palin's character, and in the 1987 film Roxanne, she co-starred with Steve Martin, continuing her active presence on the screen throughout the 1980s.
During the same period, Shelley Duvall transformed into a producer and began creating programs for children. In 1982, she founded Platter's Productions and produced TV programs such as Faerie Tale Theatre, Tall Tales & Legends, Nightmare Classics, and Bedtime Stories, utilizing her extensive network including actors like Robin Williams and Bud Cort, as well as director Altman.
Later, in the 1990s, Shelley Duvall returned to Texas and appeared in Steven Soderbergh's film Kafka, and also starred in Jane Campion's film The Portrait of a Lady.
She announced her retirement from acting in 2002 but made a surprise comeback in 2023 by appearing in the independent film The Forest Hills. This work became her final film.
