Daejeon City Announces Traffic Measures... Intersections to Be Changed to T-Shaped
Detour Information Provided via Navigation and Variable Message Signs (VMS)
The city of Daejeon announced that it will implement traffic measures to minimize inconvenience for citizens following the full closure of Yudeunggyo due to partial subsidence of the upper slab (deck) caused by heavy rain in the early morning of the 10th.
The city has begun rerouting a total of 109 buses on 20 routes that usually pass through Yudeunggyo. These include 11 outer routes, 1 express, 7 urban routes, and 1 Gyeryong route, now detouring via Taepyeonggyo and Domagyo to minimize non-operating sections.
The Yudeunggyo intersection will be changed from a four-way to a three-way (T-shaped) intersection. In the existing four-lane section of Gyebaek-ro, the first lane will be designated for U-turns, the second lane for left turns only, and the third, fourth, and fifth lanes for right turns. Straight and left-turn restrictions on the Yudeungcheon Dong-ro section will be lifted to ensure smooth traffic flow.
The intersection modification work, including the installation of 29 safety signs, 300㎡ of road markings, and one set of traffic signal facilities, will begin on the 12th and be implemented from the 13th.
Additionally, overall traffic safety facilities such as central line dashed markings and U-turn lane securing will be changed. Detour information is being provided through navigation systems, variable message signs (VMS), the Traffic Information Center, the Bus Transport Association website, and BIT (bus stop information terminals).
Choi Jongmoon, Director of Daejeon’s Transportation Bureau, said, “As there are concerns about traffic inconvenience for citizens due to the full closure of Yudeunggyo, we ask that you check the detour routes provided by the city and drive safely. We will continue to monitor changes in traffic volume on detour roads to ensure smooth traffic flow.”
Earlier, at around 8:20 a.m. on the 10th, a report was made to the police that part of Yudeunggyo had subsided. The police notified the Daejeon city road department, and a full closure has been in effect since 8:28 a.m. that day.
Upon inspection, the city found that the old bridge on the downstream side had subsided by 40cm and the new bridge on the upstream side by 20cm. The city suspects that the subsidence was caused by scouring (erosion by river water, etc.) under the bridge piers.
Yudeunggyo was completed in December 1970 with a width of 15.65m and a length of 168m (old bridge). The width was later expanded by 14.35m as the city grew, bringing it to its current width of 30m.
The city estimates that a detailed safety inspection of the new bridge will take about one month, and repairs or reinforcement based on the inspection results will take about 12 months. For the old bridge, the city is considering demolishing and rebuilding it in conjunction with the construction of Subway Line 2, which is expected to take at least 36 months.
