Chairman Choi Visits Seoul Police Female Riot Squad for Encouragement... Listens to Young Officers' Difficulties
Gives Roses as a Token of Respect for Uniform and Support for Dedication to Public Safety
Choi Ho-jeong, Chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, visited the 15th Mobile Unit of the 1st Mobile Division at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency on the 8th, expressing gratitude for their efforts in protecting citizen safety on the front lines of public security.
The 15th Mobile Unit is the only unit among the 60 mobile units of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency composed entirely of female police officers.
During the visit, Chairperson Choi prepared roses as a symbol of respect for those in uniform dedicated to public service and to encourage the officers for their hard work in ensuring citizen safety, personally handing flowers to each member.
After hearing about the operations of the female police mobile unit, Chairperson Choi said, “As women's participation in politics and society increases and women-led demonstrations become more frequent, the role of the female police mobile unit on the ground is significant. What I want to emphasize is that your safety means the safety of the citizens,” adding, “The council will always stand with you to improve your safety and working conditions.”
At this meeting, the female police mobile officers shared the realities of facing injury risks during protests and the difficulties of waiting for long hours inside the cramped mobile unit vehicles.
They also calmly explained the occupational fate of having to guard the scene while enduring verbal abuse from some individuals, as well as the working conditions of early morning shifts and frequent deployments even on holidays.
The 15th Mobile Unit mainly handles blocking illegal protests by women, protecting female protest participants and citizens, and providing security for VIPs.
Chairperson Choi stated, “The better the council performs and the more council members listen to the voices of citizens, the less the female police mobile unit will need to be deployed,” and added, “We will become a council that diligently listens to and resolves citizens’ difficulties on the ground.”
Chairperson Choi, who took office on the 1st, visited the police mobile unit located in Changsin-dong, Jongno-gu, as her second field visit following the Elementary Neulbom School.
