Torrential Downpour... Yeongcheon Mayor Choi Kimoon Mobilizes All Administrative Resources for Heavy Rain Damage Recovery

Heavy Rain in Yeongcheon: 82 People from 62 Households Displaced

Yeongcheon City in North Gyeongsang Province has actively engaged in recovery efforts for the damage caused by heavy rainfall and in preventing secondary damage from June 8 to 10.

According to the city, the accumulated precipitation reached 235.6mm, and as of 4 p.m. on the 10th, a total of 138 cases of damage, including flooding of roads, houses, and farmland, had been reported.


The reported damage was concentrated in the northern towns and districts of Yeongcheon, such as Kumho-eup and Gogeong-myeon, with 82 people from 62 households displaced due to the heavy rain.


To respond to the torrential rain, the city issued Emergency Level 2 at 1:10 a.m. on the 9th and at 5:20 a.m. on the 10th, putting one third of all city employees on emergency duty.


At 10 a.m. on the 11th, the city held an Integrated Support Headquarters meeting to address the damage caused by the partial collapse of the embankment at Jukgokji in Hwanam-myeon.


In areas such as Nambu-dong and parts of Cheongtong-myeon, which suffered from flood damage, about 60 members from volunteer organizations were dispatched to help remove soil and debris and clean houses as part of the recovery efforts.


Song Noseon, an employee at Sewonmulsan working in Yeongcheon, said, "This is the first time in my life I've seen such record-breaking heavy rain," and added, "I hope all citizens will be cautious to avoid any damage from the torrential rain."


Mayor Choi Kimoon stated, "I urge residents affected by the heavy rain to be cautious of disasters such as embankment collapses and landslides," and added, "We will do our utmost to provide administrative support for swift recovery work to prevent secondary damage, especially with the rainy season front expected to move north next week."
