"Flood Risk Alert" Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Collaborate with Government to Enhance Navigation Systems

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia are strengthening cooperation with government agencies to advance navigation systems capable of issuing flood zone alerts.

On the 10th, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia announced that they signed a business agreement to enhance navigation systems for preventing road and underground passage flooding accidents, together with the Ministry of Science and ICT (hereinafter referred to as MSIT) and the Ministry of Environment at the Hangang Flood Control Office located in Seocho-gu, Seoul.

This business agreement aims to provide real-time flood risk alert notifications on navigation systems in preparation for flooding accidents caused by the summer monsoon season every year. The project is significant as it represents a public-private collaboration to strengthen public safety.

Since early this year, MSIT, the Ministry of Environment, and the National Information Society Agency (NIA) have joined forces with six navigation companies including Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, Kakao Mobility, T Map Mobility, Naver, iNavi Systems, and Mappers.

MSIT has overseen the project, establishing a collaborative framework and coordinating directions for navigation improvements to prepare for various disaster situations beyond just flood information. The Ministry of Environment has built a system to promptly provide flood risk information to NIA, while each company is responsible for delivering the data relayed by NIA to the navigation systems of vehicles operating near flood risk areas.

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia have been providing this alert service since the 4th. In addition to existing flood control information notifications, the service features the transmission of flood risk sections based on real-time flood alerts and risk guidance information related to dam discharge.

Going forward, Hyundai Motor Company and Kia customers will receive risk alerts through their navigation systems when driving near flood warning areas. This enables preemptive actions such as detouring roads or reducing speed before entering underground passages. Users of Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, and Genesis vehicles subscribed to connected car services can utilize this service without any separate software updates.

Lee Jong-ho, Minister of MSIT, said, "Based on the business agreement signed today, we will continue active public-private cooperation to ensure that digital technology contributes to minimizing public damage and enhancing crisis response capabilities amid rapid climate change."

Han Hwa-jin, Minister of Environment, added, "With today's business agreement, we will do our best to protect public safety from floods by further integrating flood forecasting policies using digital technology with the private sector's advanced technologies."

Song Chang-hyun, AVP Head (President) of Hyundai Motor Company and Kia, stated, "The collaborative framework for public-private data sharing and technological advancement for real-time data-based services is becoming increasingly important. Hyundai Motor Company and Kia will swiftly establish a cooperative system with the government and provide services to ensure customer safety."
