Real-Time Weather Monitoring... Rapid Initial Response Focused on the Field
Pohang City, North Gyeongsang Province, held an emergency 'Heavy Rain Countermeasure Meeting with Related Agencies' on the 10th at the Disaster and Safety Situation Room, presided over by Deputy Mayor Jang Sangkil.
On the 10th, Pohang City held an emergency "Heavy Rain Countermeasure Meeting with Related Agencies" presided over by Vice Mayor Jang Sanggil at the Disaster Safety Situation Room.
This meeting was organized to strengthen preparedness by sharing key management items for high-risk areas due to the ongoing heavy rainfall. The city decided to make every effort to prevent damage from extreme rain by reinforcing the response system through interdepartmental cooperation, including preemptive evacuation and frequent inspections.
In addition, each relevant department will strengthen countermeasures for areas at high risk of casualties, such as landslide-prone zones, steep slopes, cut slopes, and large construction sites. The city will expand monitoring of disaster-prone areas and share the results to prevent damage from soil runoff and landslides, especially as the ground has weakened due to continuous rainfall.
Particularly, recognizing the importance of a swift initial response in similar situations, the city instructed township and neighborhood offices working on the front lines to remain vigilant and ensure that residents can be evacuated proactively at the first sign of danger to prevent casualties.
Deputy Mayor Jang Sangkil emphasized, "If even a small sign of danger is detected, please make every effort to prevent casualties through preemptive emergency measures," and added, "Strengthen realistic and specific countermeasures by inspecting landslide-prone areas, maintaining urban drainage systems, and confirming evacuation routes and shelters in advance to predict and prevent damage."
The city is focusing its administrative efforts on preventing safety accidents by strengthening preliminary monitoring of steep slopes with weakened ground due to continuous rain, as the risk of collapse and landslides is heightened, and by taking preemptive measures in areas prone to landslides and flooding.
The city has also convened autonomous disaster prevention teams in each township and neighborhood to remove hazardous trees that could cause harm to people or property during heavy rain, and is working to prevent damage by inspecting drainage channels, rainwater inlets, and manholes.
Since late at night on the 8th, Pohang City has experienced repeated issuance and lifting of heavy rain advisories and warnings, with an average rainfall of 189mm (maximum 259mm at Daesong Unjesan) recorded as of 11 a.m. on the 10th. The city is monitoring weather conditions in real time and responding swiftly.
