Refreshing Water Streams, Boasting Scenic Views
Beating the Heat at Donggok, Seongbul, Eochi, and Geumcheon Valleys
Gwangyang City in Jeollanam-do recommended the four major valleys of Baegunsan as the best places to cool off when the monsoon season ends and the vacation season begins.
The four major valleys of Baegunsan (Seongbul Valley, Donggok Valley, Eochi Valley, Geumcheon Valley), boasting cool streams and beautiful scenery, each have their own charm and are perfect places to beat the heat and heal the body and mind tired from daily life.
Seongbul Valley in Bonggang-myeon is a valley originating between Dosolbong and Hyeongjebong peaks of Baegunsan.
Going upstream along Seongbul Valley, which boasts deep and clear water, beautiful forests, and unique rock formations, visitors are greeted by the serene sounds of nature at Seongbulsa Temple, where buildings such as Daeungjeon, Gwaneumjeon, and Geungnakjeon are arranged.
Donggok Valley is the longest among the four major valleys.
Originating between the Baegunsan summit and Daribong peak, from Hanjae, Donggok Valley flows into Gwangyang Bay. It features spectacular scenery created by abundant water volume and majestic landscapes such as Yongso, Jangsu Rock, Seonyudae, and Byeongam Waterfall, and has a major hiking trail leading to Baegunsan.
Eochi Valley in Jinsang-myeon is famous for Orodae, which is cool enough to have dew even in the summer midday, and Gusi Waterfall, which does not dry up even during droughts.
The ecological trail (1.25 km) from Naehoe Bridge at the valley entrance to Gusi Waterfall is a recharging space where visitors can experience the primeval forest in its natural state.
Geumcheon Valley in Daap-myeon originates from Oknyubong, where a legend says a fairy wove a loom.
Geumcheon Valley Campground, surrounded by the pristine natural forest of Geumcheon Valley, has become well-known among campers visiting the Seomjin River, attracting steady visitors throughout all four seasons.
Kim Seongsu, head of the Tourism Division, said, “We plan to place safety management personnel throughout the four major valleys and operate life jacket rental stations to create a safe environment for tourists to visit with peace of mind,” adding, “We highly recommend Baegunsan’s four major valleys in Gwangyang City as the optimal resting place for this summer’s travel destination.”
