Yeongam-gun Wins Korea Local Autonomy Management Awards Cultural Tourism Grand Prize

Community-Led Economic Tourism Focused on Sustainable Tourism Receives High Praise

Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Woo Seung-hee) received the Grand Prize in the Culture and Tourism category at the 29th Korea Local Autonomy Management Awards, hosted by the Korea Public Autonomy Research Institute, held on the 9th at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do.

According to the county on the 10th, the Korea Local Autonomy Management Awards are given annually to basic local governments nationwide that have achieved outstanding results in regional development and local administration innovation. It boasts the highest prestige and tradition among private local government evaluations.

Yeongam-gun participated in evaluations across six fields: administrative innovation, culture and tourism, welfare and health, regional development, industrial economy, and climate environment, passing through the first to fourth rounds of screening, which included resident satisfaction.

In particular, Yeongam-gun’s resident-led economic tourism, focused on ‘sustainable tourism’ rather than conventional tourism policies, is known to have received high scores in the evaluation.

Last year, Yeongam-gun consecutively attracted the National Mahan History and Culture Center and the Wolchulsan National Park Ecological Exploration Center. Based on these tourism hubs, the county plans to provide tourism welfare that combines education, tourism, and ecology to visitors from across the country.

The Yeongam Moonlight Festival, which newly developed Wolchulsan Mountain as nighttime content, was selected as one of the ‘Top 100 Night Spots in Korea’ by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the Yeongam Wangin Cultural Festival was selected as a representative cultural tourism festival of Korea for four consecutive years.

Governor Woo Seung-hee said, “This award is the result of grassroots local autonomy administration that seeks policies together with the residents. Under the slogan ‘A Greater Yeongam Leaping Forward through Innovation,’ the seeds sown so far are bearing valuable fruit,” and added, “We will strive even harder to produce results that Yeongam residents can feel.”
