Recently, over 300 vehicles were damaged by flooding due to heavy rain.
According to the insurance industry on the 10th, from the 6th to 9 a.m. on the 10th, a total of 304 flood-damaged vehicles were reported to 12 non-life insurance companies selling auto insurance over five days, with estimated damages amounting to 2.997 billion KRW.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, heavy rain fell nationwide from the evening of the 9th until early the next morning, with 65.9mm in Gunsan, Jeonbuk, and 57.2mm in Boryeong, Chungnam. Especially in Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungnam areas, torrential rains exceeding 200mm caused over 100 reported damages.
An insurance industry official explained, "A large number of damaged vehicles were reported in a short period due to the heavy rain," adding, "There may be a time lag in reporting, so the number of damaged vehicles and the amount of damages are expected to increase."
Non-life insurers are taking measures to minimize flood risks using their own emergency systems. This year, starting last month, financial authorities have also begun implementing an 'Emergency Evacuation Alert System' in cooperation with auto insurance companies, the Korea Insurance Development Institute, and the General Insurance Association. This system provides evacuation guidance using auto insurance subscription information and can be received regardless of whether the vehicle is insured or subscribed to Hi-Pass if it is at risk of flooding or secondary accidents.
