Firefighter Park Youngjin Wins Gold Prize for Improving Fire Hydrant Valve Design
Ulsan City announced on the 10th that it has selected six proposals as the “2024 Ulsan City Outstanding Public Official Proposals.”
To discover excellent policies and reflect them in its administration, Ulsan City received a total of 40 proposals from public officials between May 1 last year and April 30 this year. After review by relevant departments and experts, and deliberation by the Ulsan Citizen Ideas Review Committee, six final proposals were selected as “Outstanding Proposals.”
The selected outstanding proposals include one Gold Award, one Silver Award, two Bronze Awards, and two Encouragement Awards.
The Gold Award went to “Improvement of Hydrant Valve Design,” proposed by Fire Captain Park Youngjin of the Fire Administration Division of the Fire Headquarters.
This proposal addresses the difficulty in distinguishing between water supply and hydrant valves, which have identical designs, by introducing a unique hydrant valve design. In particular, it is expected to prevent frequent burial during road construction, thereby reducing unnecessary restoration costs.
The Silver Award was given to “Marking the Middle Point of Fire Hoses for Easy Organization,” proposed by Fire Lieutenant Lee Sangmu of the 119 General Situation Room at the Fire Headquarters.
This proposal suggests marking the midpoint of a 15-meter-long fire hose to make it easier to find the center when draining residual water and rolling up the hose after firefighting operations.
Through pilot implementation by the Fire Headquarters, the proposal has been confirmed to improve satisfaction among field personnel by enabling faster retrieval and organization of fire hoses, easier drying, and reducing the physical burden on firefighters.
The Bronze Award was given to “Resource Saving and Recycling Promotion through Streetlight Pole Recycling,” proposed by Officer Jang Namjin of the General Construction Headquarters.
When selecting targets for the annual replacement of old streetlights in each district, this proposal suggests pre-identifying the quantity and linking it with new streetlight installation projects promoted by the General Construction Headquarters to recycle streetlight poles. This is expected to not only save the budget and protect the environment but also allow additional streetlights to be installed with the saved budget, thereby increasing convenience for citizens.
Ulsan City will present the Mayor’s Award and prize money to the outstanding proposers, and the Gold and Silver Award proposals will be recommended to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety as “Central Outstanding Proposals.”
An official from Ulsan City stated, “This year’s outstanding public official proposals include many cases where continuous awareness of issues based on field experience has led to groundbreaking improvements in their own work,” and added, “We will actively incorporate the adopted proposals into administration to promote budget savings, administrative innovation, and citizen convenience.”
Ulsan City is also continuously receiving proposals from public officials through the National Sinmungo to actively reflect various opinions in city administration.
