Chung-Ang University Student Song Gi-cheol and Others Praised for Good Deeds
Man in His 50s Collapses While Waiting for Meal, Prompt Response
"Acted Calmly as Learned...Relieved by Recovery of Consciousness"
A man in his 50s who collapsed in a university student cafeteria regained consciousness thanks to the prompt emergency response of students. On the 10th, News1 reported, "A man in his 50s who collapsed in the Chung-Ang University student cafeteria was safely transported to a nearby hospital by a 119 ambulance with the help of students." On the university's internal community free board, a post titled "Looking for students who performed good deeds in the student cafeteria" was posted on the 8th. The post, written by the person in charge of the campus welfare cafeteria, stated, "We are looking for the student who performed CPR until the dormitory staff member who collapsed in the cafeteria regained consciousness and went to the hospital, the student who checked his condition together, and the student who called the ambulance."
According to News1, the situation was urgent at the time. Song Ki-cheol (26), a student at Chung-Ang University College of Pharmacy, visited the school with a classmate to have lunch around 11:30 a.m. on the 5th. After receiving his meal first in the student cafeteria, Song waited at the table for his classmate, when a man in his 50s, who was waiting in line right behind his classmate, suddenly lost consciousness and collapsed.
Song immediately rushed to the collapsed man, put down the tray the man was holding, and knelt on both knees on the bare floor. Another student, A, who was eating at a distance, also immediately came to help Song. Song’s classmate stopped receiving food and promptly called 119. After checking the man’s response for about 10 seconds, Song, with A’s help, performed CPR. Song and A took turns pressing the man’s chest, and soon the man regained consciousness and was transported to a nearby hospital. It was reported that his life is currently not in danger. The students acted in a coordinated manner and saved a life.
Regarding this incident, Song told News1, "I felt relieved only after the person who had collapsed recovered breathing and consciousness." Song said he had witnessed a woman collapse on Subway Line 9 about two months ago. At that time, he immediately rushed over to check her consciousness and observed a nurse performing emergency treatment, which helped him. He remembered checking whether the patient’s condition was hypoglycemia before performing CPR and applied that knowledge this time.
Song said, "It was my first time attempting CPR on an emergency patient in my life, so I worried whether this might actually be harmful," but added, "I received about three hours of emergency responder training through a pharmacy extracurricular program, and they said, 'When in doubt, you should definitely proceed,' so I tried to act calmly as I was taught." He added, "I am currently studying to become a pharmacist and want to be a pharmacist who can provide practical help in the future."
