"Children Only Looking at Phones... Gangnam-gu Operates Specialized Psychological Program"

Gangnam-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) is operating a specialized psychological program called "The Power of Self-Regulation Raised by Sufficiently Good Parents" at the Youth Psychological Support Center Saishim and Taehwa Christian Social Welfare Center to prevent media overdependence among children and adolescents during the summer vacation.

Recently, as the overdependence on digital media devices among children and adolescents has increased, one in four center users has reported behavioral control problems. However, despite this reality and need, there is a lack of specialized education to help caregivers actively address their children's media overdependence issues.

Accordingly, Saishim, a specialized youth psychological support institution, has prepared a professional program for adolescents and caregivers. Children and adolescents can learn proper media usage habits, and caregivers can assess their child's temperament and parenting attitudes while understanding the relationship between parent-child attachment levels and addiction vulnerability.

Additionally, in cooperation with Taehwa Christian Social Welfare Center, in-person lectures have been expanded to the Suseo-Segok area. The first and second lectures for caregivers are held twice: in the morning at the center and in the evening at the welfare center, allowing working parents to participate.

The lectures consist of a total of four sessions. This month, the first and second lectures for caregivers will be held. On the 16th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the center, and on the 18th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the welfare center, a lecture titled "Understanding Parent-Child Temperament Using TCI (Temperament and Character Inventory)" will be given. It is expected to provide an opportunity to understand interactions that vary according to differences in temperament between caregivers and children.

On the 23rd from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the center, and on the 25th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the welfare center, a lecture titled "Parenting Coaching Using PAT (Parenting Attitude Test)" will follow. Caregivers will have time to review their own parenting attitudes to improve their children's self-regulation skills.

On the 20th and 27th of next month from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the center, a group program for 3rd to 6th-grade elementary students will be held to check media usage habits and learn proper media usage methods. On September 4th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., an online special lecture titled "Understanding Attachment and Media Overdependence" will be held. Professor Kwon Kyung-in, author of "Parent Psychological Class," will explain the impact of parent-child attachment relationships on addictive behaviors.

Since the application periods vary for each program, residents who wish to participate can check detailed information and apply on the center's website.

District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong stated, "The phenomenon of overdependence on digital media devices is gradually lowering in age and developing into a major issue of parent-child conflict," adding, "We will actively promote specialized programs to prevent media overdependence and to foster secure parent-child attachment and healthy psychological development."
