Dongdaemun-gu Creates a World Where People Want to Have and Raise Children... Including Emergency Child Escort Services Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun District, visiting a daycare center

Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) is accelerating efforts to create a “child-friendly city” where both children and parents can be happy by implementing various childbirth and childcare policies.

First, the district is launching the “Emergency Child Accompaniment” service, which supports parents of children aged 3 to 12 living in the area by providing volunteer assistance on the same day in unexpected situations when they cannot take care of their children. Volunteers can accompany children when they leave school or visit hospitals. This project was initiated to complement the government’s “Childcare Service,” which has difficulty responding immediately to sudden childcare gaps.

Volunteers for emergency accompaniment can be women residents of Dongdaemun-gu who have children. The activity period is from August to December 2024, and participants will receive incentives such as recognition of volunteer hours and recommendations for the district mayor’s commendation for outstanding volunteers.

Residents wishing to volunteer for emergency accompaniment should submit an application form and a copy of their resident registration by July 19 to the district’s Childcare Division via email. For more details, please check the district website or contact the Childcare Division.

Additionally, the district is recruiting “Family Ambassadors” who will promote childbirth and childcare policies. Family Ambassadors will post content on their personal SNS accounts to improve awareness about marriage, childbirth, and childcare, and promote related support policies.

The recruitment categories include newlyweds, three-person households, four-person households, multicultural families, and senior households, with a total of 40 people to be selected. Any Dongdaemun-gu resident operating personal SNS (YouTube, Instagram, blogs, Facebook, etc.) can apply.

The activity period is from August 2024 to July 2026 (2 years), and a modest activity allowance will be provided.

Applications can be downloaded from the district website, filled out, and submitted via email to the person in charge. After the first document screening and the second interview screening, successful candidates will be announced. For more information, please contact the Childcare Division.

Meanwhile, at the end of September, the “Agasarang Center” will open on the 2nd floor of a mixed-use residential and commercial building near Cheongnyangni Station (620-60 Jeonnong-dong), offering a comfortable and pleasant space for various services related to pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare.

The center will include ▲ counseling rooms for pregnancy and infertility consultations ▲ education rooms offering various programs such as pre- and post-pregnancy health management, childbirth preparation, and grandparent childcare classes ▲ a smart playroom where parents and children can enjoy together ▲ counseling rooms for medical expense support related to maternal and infant care ▲ and a cozy and warm resting area.

The center’s operations will officially begin in October, strengthening systematic support for pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare through diverse and effective programs, including medical expense support and professional counseling.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “If we create an environment where people want to have and raise children, the low birthrate problem will naturally be resolved. We will develop various policies to reduce the burden on caregivers and effectively promote childbirth and childcare policies to make Dongdaemun-gu a place filled with the bright laughter of children.”
