The UNICEF Korea Committee (Chairman Jeong Gap-young) announced on the 9th that it held the ‘21st Korea Children’s Assembly Busan Regional Conference’ at the Arpina Hotel in Haeundae, Busan on the 7th. The event was attended by about 80 children aged 10 to 15, along with about 110 leaders and supervising teachers, and proceeded in the order of ▲children’s rights awareness survey and children’s rights education ▲group topic discussions ▲drafting of a resolution ▲adoption ▲selection of 7 children representatives for the Busan regional conference.

On that day, the children held group discussions under the theme ‘Climate Crisis and Children’s Sense of Crisis,’ using keywords such as ‘children who need more help amid climate change,’ ‘children’s health, educational environment, knowledge education, and participation in relation to climate change.’ Based on the children’s discussion results, the final resolution was drafted and adopted. The adopted policy resolution will be delivered to the Busan Metropolitan City.

The 7 children representatives for the Busan regional conference, elected by the participating children’s votes, will participate as representatives in the ‘21st Korea Children’s Assembly National Conference’ to be held in August. Mayor Park Hyung-jun congratulated the event through a video message, saying, “This is a meaningful event where children themselves consider alternatives to create a sustainable future they will live in,” and added, “We will listen more carefully to the resolutions and children’s opinions received every year.”

The ‘Korea Children’s Assembly’ began in 2004 to guarantee children’s right to participate according to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Busan regional conference first started in 2014 and has been held annually. Since 2021, it has been held in cooperation between the UNICEF Child-Friendly City Busan and the UNICEF Korea Committee.
