At the event, Chairman Shin said, “I applaud the efforts of all members of my alma mater as they strive to be selected for the Glocal University 30 project by the government. I hope this donation will invigorate the university’s development and serve as a catalyst for further alumni contributions. Congratulations to President Lee Haewoo on his reappointment, and I offer my full support for his leadership in advancing the university. I will provide both material and moral support to help secure the final designation for the Glocal University 30 project.”

President Lee expressed his gratitude, saying, “I sincerely thank Chairman Shin Jungtaek for his exceptional interest and affection for his alma mater. Through the final designation of the Glocal University 30 project, we will do our utmost to establish the ‘Busan Open MEGA Consortium University’ model, focusing on specialized fields such as profit-oriented integrated industry-academia cooperation, future energy, healthcare, cultural content, and B-Heritage.”

Chairman Shin founded Sewoon Steel in 1978 and has dedicated his career to the steel industry, growing the company into a leading mid-sized enterprise in the Busan region. As a prominent figure in the local economy, he is regarded as a symbol of ‘Noblesse Oblige.’

He has served as the 19th and 20th President of the Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and as Chairman of the Busan Community Chest of Korea (2015-2021), earning great trust from the local community through his leadership in social contribution.

To date, he has donated over 1.4 billion KRW to his alma mater, Dong-A University, and more than 10 billion KRW across various fields including society, education, sports, and the economy.

Chairman Shin has also been recognized for his contributions to regional development, receiving the Order of Civil Merit, Moran Medal (2015), Korea Creative Economy Leader Award (2013), Proud Citizen Award Grand Prize (2012), and Busan Citizen Industry Award (2009).

Dong-A University has been provisionally designated for the Ministry of Education’s ‘2024 Glocal University 30’ project by proposing innovative directions such as operating a ‘profit-generating integrated industrial complex’ with Dongseo University and institutionalizing the ‘Busan Open MEGA Consortium University’ model.

The ‘Glocal University 30’ project is a government initiative to intensively foster regional universities, providing a total of 100 billion KRW in support over five years. Non-metropolitan universities are fiercely competing for survival through this project.

Dong-A University has been provisionally designated after submitting an innovative planning proposal in alliance with Dongseo University. The consortium university model, as outlined by the Ministry of Education, allows two or more universities to maintain their independence while establishing a joint decision-making body to achieve shared goals and apply as a consortium.

The final designation results will be announced in August. If selected as a Glocal University, Dong-A University will receive 100 billion KRW in support over five years, as well as priority for regulatory reforms and comprehensive administrative and financial support for university innovation.
