Hwang Jeonga, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (representing Yuseong District, Daejeon), announced on the morning of the 9th that she met with Yoon Youngbin, Commissioner of the Korea Aerospace Administration, at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building and requested the establishment of a new Research and Development Headquarters for the Korea Aerospace Administration in Yuseong, Daejeon.
The Korea Aerospace Administration, which was launched on May 27 and is located in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province, has faced ongoing concerns about the weakening of its research and development capabilities, as most of the aerospace industry’s R&D infrastructure is concentrated in Daejeon.
In fact, major research and development institutions such as the Korea Aerospace Research Institute, Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, Agency for Defense Development (ADD), and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) are all located in Daejeon.
Hwang Jeonga stated, “Daejeon is a city where the nation’s top-level space research and development infrastructure, including research institutions, universities, and numerous related companies, is concentrated,” and added, “We must accelerate efforts to strengthen our capabilities for the space era by establishing a new R&D headquarters in Yuseong, Daejeon.”
She continued, “By 2040, the global space industry market is expected to exceed 1.5 trillion dollars, and the world has already entered a war for space supremacy without gunfire,” emphasizing, “Building infrastructure for the aerospace industry will become the core of the national survival strategy.”
Hwang further stated, “In order to secure high-quality professionals at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute and Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, which are directly affiliated with the Korea Aerospace Administration, it is essential to improve the treatment of field researchers, including increasing funding, personnel expenses, workforce expansion, and reforming the PBS system,” and added, “Proper support measures must be prepared to back the great leap forward in the aerospace industry.”
Yoon Youngbin, Commissioner of the Korea Aerospace Administration, responded, “I will do my best to ensure that the Korea Aerospace Research Institute and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute can work together as one team,” and added, “We will thoroughly review your suggestions and strive to develop the aerospace industry into an aerospace economy.”
