Cheonan City in Chungnam Province has begun creating a habitat for Euryale ferox, a class II endangered wild species.

On the 9th, the city signed an agreement for the “Cheonan Endangered Species Conservation Project” at Jiksan Sam-eun Park with the Geumgang Basin Environmental Office, Shinsegae Food Co., Ltd., and Chollipo Arboretum to secure biodiversity.

According to the agreement, the Geumgang Basin Environmental Office will oversee the project, while Cheonan City will be responsible for habitat protection, management, and promotion. Shinsegae Food will provide financial support, and Chollipo Arboretum will handle the transplantation and monitoring of Euryale ferox.

The city plans to create an alternative habitat within Jiksan Sam-eun Reservoir in Cheonan, expecting it to become an important site for species conservation.

Mayor Park Sangdon said, “The endangered species conservation project will be a new step toward enhancing biodiversity and preserving the ecosystem. I hope that many citizens visiting Sam-eun Park will find unique enjoyment in seeing Euryale ferox in full bloom.”

Meanwhile, Euryale ferox is the plant with the largest leaves among Korean plants and was designated as an endangered species in 1989.
