"Impact on the Situation... Difficult to Predict Advantages or Disadvantages"
Jang Dong-hyuk, a candidate for the Supreme Council member of the People Power Party, pointed to pro-Yoon (pro-Yoon Suk-yeol faction) figures and personnel from Won Hee-ryong’s party representative candidate camp as those leading the controversy over ‘ignoring Kim Geon-hee’s texts.’
In an interview with MBC Radio’s ‘Kim Jong-bae’s Focus’ on the 9th, when asked who he thought was playing the ‘ignoring texts’ controversy, Jang said, “Looking at the people mentioned in media reports and the spokespersons from certain camps who are making various statements, the public can probably guess who is behind this.” When the host asked again, “Is it pro-Yoon figures and Won Hee-ryong’s camp?” he replied, “I think so (there is no other interpretation).”
When asked whether he thought this would affect the People Power Party’s convention race, he said, “It is difficult to predict exactly who it will benefit or disadvantage at this point, but it seems it will have an impact on the race.” Regarding the possibility that Yongsan was involved in the recent text leak, he said, “Yongsan has issued an official statement,” adding, “But seeing that five more texts have continued to be released afterward, I wonder if Yongsan is really involved.”
When asked whether Han Dong-hoon, former emergency committee chairman of the People Power Party (currently a candidate for party representative), had disclosed the text contents, he said, “They said it became a controversy during the election period, and Han was the emergency committee chairman while I was the secretary-general, but no one ever spoke to me about these texts,” adding, “However, he did tell me that ‘he himself should apologize and conveyed his position, but judging by the current atmosphere on that side (Yongsan), it seems unlikely.’”
As the People Power Party’s convention has turned into a mudslinging fight over the text controversy between Mrs. Kim and former committee chairman Han, voices within the party are expressing concerns about aftereffects. There is a growing worry that if the clashes continue, it could become a ‘self-harm drama’ that burdens both the party and the presidential office.
