Ulsan City to Prevent Sewage Backflow...Jangsaengpo Undersea Sewer Pipeline Dredging Project

Resolving Civil Complaints and Ensuring Smooth Sewage Treatment from July to October

Ulsan City announced on the 9th that it will begin dredging construction in July for a 200-meter section of the underwater sewage pipeline installed beneath the sea at Jangsaengpo, with completion scheduled for October.

This pipeline, installed in 1998, transports sewage generated from the Samsan-dong area in Nam-gu to the Yongyeon Water Quality Improvement Facility. Since a portion of the pipeline is located 14 meters deep under the sea at Jangsaengpo, it has been difficult to empty the pipe, making it challenging to inspect internal damage or leaks with surveillance cameras.

In response, Ulsan City successfully conducted an investigation of the sewage pipeline in 2022 by integrating various technologies such as ultrasound, underwater exploration (sonar), and electrical leak detection. The investigation revealed that about 70% of the Jangsaengpo underwater sewage pipeline was filled with sediment.

However, since the sewage constantly fills the pipeline, dredging construction was previously impossible. Recently, a domestic company developed a patented "separated discharge dredging" technology that enables dredging even when the pipeline is full. With this patented method, the city will proceed with the construction. Ulsan City expects that, once the dredging is completed, complaints related to sewage backflow and similar issues will be significantly reduced.

An official from Ulsan City stated, "We plan to actively try various new technologies for sewage pipeline management," and added, "We will do our best to provide Ulsan citizens with a safe and pleasant urban environment."
