About 200 Participants Attend the National Marine Culture Scholars Conference
The “14th National Marine Culture Scholars Conference” issue session, “Glocal Marine Forum,” hosted by the Institute of Island and Marine Culture at Mokpo National University (President Song Ha-cheol), was held on the 5th.
According to Mokpo National University on the 9th, this forum gathered researchers related to islands and marine studies from across the country to present a future vision for marine research and explore development strategies. Through information sharing and networking, it successfully proclaimed a glocal future vision for marine research.
The forum took place at the College of Humanities of Mokpo National University from 4 PM to 6 PM. About 200 participants of the National Marine Culture Scholars Conference attended, including researchers from over 50 universities such as Kyonggi University, Pukyong National University, and Jeju National University; seven public institutions including the Korea Maritime Institute and Gyeongnam Research Institute; 19 research institutes including the Korea Coastal Association; as well as overseas researchers.

The first presentation was given by Professor Cha Joo-hwan, Director of Planning at Mokpo National University, on “A Global Marine Specialized University Leading Innovation in Eco-friendly Zero-carbon Ships and Green Marine Energy Industry.” It was a session to discuss Mokpo National University’s marine specialization strategy aiming to enter the Glocal University 30.
The second presentation was by Dr. Lee Seul-gi of the Korea Maritime Institute on “Coastal City Regeneration Strategies Utilizing Marine Cultural Resources,” and the third was by Professor Seo Jong-seok of Pukyong National University on “The 6th Industry and Sustainable Fisheries.”
Hong Seok-jun, Director of the Institute of Island and Marine Culture at Mokpo National University, emphasized the importance of the forum, stating, “Through this forum, we rediscovered the value of marine and island culture and created a place to seek policies and strategies for a sustainable future. This forum, where domestic and international marine researchers gathered to discuss the importance and development direction of marine research, will open a new horizon for marine research.”
The Institute of Island and Marine Culture at Mokpo National University is an institution researching island and marine culture. Through this “Glocal Marine Forum,” it is taking the lead in presenting a glocal vision for marine research and promoting academic exchange and cooperation. The institute will continue to widely promote the importance of marine culture and strive for the advancement of marine research through ongoing marine-related research and academic activities.
