LG Electronics Hosts Global Hackathon to Discover webOS Content

Discovering Game and AI Content to be Integrated into webOS

LG Electronics announced on the 9th that it will expand the content competitiveness of its proprietary smart TV platform 'webOS' by collaborating with global talents.

LG Electronics recently announced through the North America Innovation Center (LG NOVA) website that it will hold a global hackathon to recruit game and artificial intelligence (AI)-based content to be installed on webOS.

This hackathon is part of an open innovation initiative to enhance the content competitiveness of webOS and expand the TV platform business. LG Electronics has set the goal of its TV business as a 'media & entertainment platform company' and has previously stated its intention to grow the webOS platform business to a trillion-won scale in revenue this year.

LG Electronics expects that the hackathon will diversify the content within the webOS platform even further. Currently, webOS hosts approximately 3,500 app contents across various fields such as ▲entertainment ▲home fitness ▲education ▲telemedicine. In particular, the number of games available on webOS globally includes about 500 game apps plus around 3,000 games from cloud gaming services such as GeForce NOW and Amazon Luna.

The AI-based personalized customer experience on webOS is also expected to expand. This year, webOS introduced features such as recognizing the user's voice with AI to allow easy login to the corresponding account and providing preset picture modes and home screens, as well as an 'AI chatbot' function that diagnoses TV status and suggests solutions when users report issues via the remote control during TV use.

Global developers wishing to participate in the hackathon can submit applications through the dedicated webpage by the 26th. Selected winners will receive prize money and an opportunity to commercialize the content developed for smart TVs equipped with webOS valued at around 200 million KRW. During the content development process, LG Electronics experts will also provide technical support.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics continues industry-academic cooperation with domestic and international universities to strengthen webOS game content. Recently, it signed a business agreement related to webOS game development with Sungkyunkwan University. Students from the Sungkyunkwan University Game Center will jointly develop three webOS games with the New York University Game Center until May next year. LG Electronics will provide webOS development tools and collaborate with students by reviewing and giving feedback on planning proposals to achieve optimal results.

Byung-ha Cho, Head of LG Electronics HE Platform Business, said, "We will continuously strengthen webOS content in various fields including games to provide personalized customer experiences that consider individual tastes and lifestyles."
