Nowon District Mayor Oh Seung-rok Attends 'Borderline Intellectual Disability Lifelong Education Support Center Opening Ceremony'

On the 8th at 11 a.m., Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, attended the opening ceremony of the ‘Borderline Intellectual Functioning Lifelong Education Support Center’ held in the auditorium on the 2nd floor of Yerum Arts School in Nowon-gu, Seoul.

The district, as the first autonomous district, established the ‘Borderline Intellectual Functioning Lifelong Education Support Center’ to provide lifelong education tailored to each life stage and build a systematic social support network for individuals with borderline intellectual functioning who are not registered as disabled and thus fall into a blind spot for various educational and welfare benefits.

The center’s main projects include ▲identification of support candidates ▲support for self-help groups (youth, young adults, families) ▲customized lifelong education programs by life cycle ▲programs linked with specialized institutions and local communities ▲vocational competency development courses ▲management and sharing of growth cases of individuals with borderline intellectual functioning.

The district expects to achieve a synergy effect in support policies for youth and adults with borderline intellectual functioning and adults with developmental disabilities by establishing the ‘Nowon Developmental Disabilities Lifelong Education Center’ in the same building where ‘Yerum Arts School,’ the nation’s first alternative arts school for youth with borderline intellectual functioning, is operating.

The opening ceremony was attended by about 100 people, including Mayor Oh Seung-rok, city and district council members, youth with borderline intellectual functioning, parents, and related organizations, and proceeded in the order of opening, progress report, greetings, congratulatory speeches, celebratory performances, commemorative photo session, and unveiling ceremony.

Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon-gu, stated, "The opening of the Lifelong Education Support Center for individuals with borderline intellectual functioning is an important step in strengthening our district’s inclusiveness and diversity," adding, "We will continue to actively support their independence and social participation through ongoing support and policy development."
