Gwangjin-gu Provides Safe Resting Places Amid Heatwave... Utilizing Private Lodging Businesses as Nighttime Cooling Shelters

Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is taking care of the safe daily lives of low-income elderly people vulnerable to heatwaves.

The district designates local lodging facilities as nighttime heatwave shelters (safe accommodations) to minimize health risks for the elderly and help them spend the summer safely.

The nighttime heatwave shelters for the elderly are places where low-income seniors aged 65 and over can escape the heat during heatwave warnings in July and August. This year, the district has added three new locations, operating a total of eight nighttime heatwave shelters.

The eligible users are low-income elderly households aged 65 or older who are vulnerable to heatwaves, including basic livelihood security recipients or near-poverty groups recommended by the local community chief as low-income households in blind spots. The principle is one person per room, but up to two people, such as a couple or family members living together, can stay together.

The nighttime heatwave shelters where overnight stays are possible can be used once a week for up to two nights during heatwave warnings. Applications can be made at the local community service center if needed.

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “The designation of nighttime heatwave shelters (safe accommodations) was established to protect the health and safety of the elderly in response to prolonged summer heatwaves and climate change,” adding, “We will always watch over the community to ensure residents have a safe summer.”
