"Pregnant Wife Suddenly Refuses to Register Marriage"
Intent to Fraudulently Receive 'Unwed Mother Support Fund'
Netizens Outraged "It's Clearly Illegal but They Are Brazen"
A man's story about being troubled because his wife suggests not registering their marriage to fraudulently receive single mother support funds has been shared.
On the 7th, a post titled "My wife says not to register our marriage even if we have a child" was uploaded on an online community. The author, Mr. A, a newlywed couple in their second year of marriage, said, "My wife said not to register our marriage even if we have a child," and added, "When I asked why she didn't want to register the marriage, she replied it was to receive single mother support funds."
After hearing his wife's words, Mr. A immediately got angry, saying, "Are you out of your mind?" However, his wife responded, "I don't understand why you treat me like I'm strange. My older sister also did this to receive (single mother) support funds, and my friends around me are receiving support in the same way," she insisted.
Mr. A expressed, "It's very shocking. I believe that marriage registration should naturally be done before having a child. I don't understand why she would risk problems by falsely registering as a single mother. I know that nowadays more people are not registering their marriage even after getting married due to reasons like housing subscription, but I can't understand how someone can have a child and still not register the marriage. It's also surprising how many people abuse the support funds," he lamented.
Netizens who read the story responded negatively, saying things like, "It's illegal, yet they openly talk about receiving support funds," "It's a clear criminal act," "It's creepy to think that such people receive support while real single mothers who deserve benefits are left out," "It's infuriating how they speak so confidently," "Just like the husband said, what will they do if problems arise later," and "Do they like making their own child fatherless?"
Meanwhile, the government provides benefits to single-parent families, including single parents, such as ▲energy usage fee reductions ▲Munhwa Nuri cultural vouchers ▲sports vouchers. Families with a median income below 52% (about 1.7 million KRW per month) also receive a monthly allowance of 200,000 KRW.
There are also advantages in housing subscription. The special supply for newlyweds targets applicants with a household monthly average income of 130% (8.46 million KRW) or less for urban workers, and dual-income households can apply up to 140% (9.11 million KRW). However, the general housing subscription, which is also available to single-person households, has a lower income criterion of 100% (6.51 million KRW) compared to newlyweds.
