Heavy Rain Mainly in Central Region... Flooding in 8 Households in Gyeongbuk

228 People Temporarily Evacuated from Landslide Risk Areas

During the weekend, heavy rain mainly affected the central region, prompting the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters to activate Level 1. In Gyeongbuk, damage from the heavy rain included flooding of 8 households.


On the 8th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that due to heavy rain warnings issued mainly for the Chungcheong and Gyeongbuk areas, Level 1 of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters was activated at 3 a.m., and the heavy rain crisis alert level was raised from 'Interest' to 'Caution.' The heavy rain crisis alert is divided into four levels: Interest - Caution - Warning - Serious.

As of 5 a.m. that day, heavy rain warnings were in effect for Daejeon, Okcheon in Chungbuk, Nonsan and Buyeo in Chungnam, and Sangju, Yecheon, Andong, Uiseong, Yeongyang, and Yeongdeok in Gyeongbuk. These areas experienced concentrated heavy rainfall from early morning. In Andong, Gyeongbuk, a total of 175.7 mm of rain fell from 9 p.m. on the 6th, with 125.4 mm falling within five hours from midnight to 5 a.m. during the same period, Yeongyang recorded 115.0 mm, Sangju 94.5 mm, and Okcheon 93.5 mm of rainfall.


Due to this heavy rain, it is reported that 8 households in Gyeongbuk alone suffered flood damage. In Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongbuk, 3 households and 5 people evacuated, while in Andong, 5 households and 19 people evacuated. In Yeongyang, 26 people were also evacuated due to flooding.


Because of the risk of landslides, a total of 228 people from 146 households temporarily evacuated. Landslide warnings were issued for Gyeongbuk and Chungnam, and landslide advisories were issued for parts of Chungbuk, Chungnam, Gyeongbuk, and Daejeon. Additionally, the government is controlling access to six national parks, riverside parking lots, campgrounds, and walking trails in areas under heavy rain warnings.


Lee Sang-min, Head of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (Minister of the Interior and Safety), stated, "Real-time situation management and prompt initial response are crucial to minimizing damage," and urged, "Local governments, police, fire departments, and related agencies should establish emergency response systems and be thoroughly prepared to ensure immediate initial response upon detecting any signs of danger."
