'Installation of General Election Voting Day Banners' - Chungnam Provincial Council Member Sent to Prosecution for Election Law Violation

'Installation of General Election Voting Day Banners' - Chungnam Provincial Council Member Sent to Prosecution for Election Law Violation Chungnam Provincial Assembly members and others installing banners on the voting day of the 22nd general election / 2024.07 Informant

The police have sent a member of the Chungnam Provincial Assembly and others to the prosecution without detention on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act for illegally installing banners during the 22nd National Assembly election.

On the 7th, Seocheon Police Station in Chungnam announced that they had sent A, a member of the Chungnam Provincial Assembly, and others to the prosecution without detention with an opinion for indictment on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act.

According to a comprehensive report by Asia Economy, A and others are accused of illegally installing election banners for the then People Power Party candidate Jang Dong-hyeok in front of the polling station in Pangyo-myeon, Seocheon-gun, on April 10, the voting day of the 22nd general election.

Earlier, the Seocheon-gun Election Commission reportedly recognized through complaints that A and others had engaged in illegal election campaigning, and after informing A by phone to "remove the banners as it is illegal election campaigning," issued a written warning on May 24.

This has raised criticism that the Election Commission may have conducted a lenient investigation into A’s violation of the Public Official Election Act.

The Democratic Party’s Chungnam Boryeong-Seocheon Regional Committee filed a complaint with the Hongseong branch of the Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office on the 31st of the same month in protest against the Election Commission’s warning to A and others.

The Public Official Election Act stipulates that election campaigning can only be conducted from the start of the election period until the day before the voting day.

A police official stated, “We cannot disclose the identity or details of the case, but it has been sent to the prosecution with an opinion for indictment without detention.”
