KT announced on the 7th that it signed a "Business Agreement for Joint Research and Development of AICT Applied Technology" with Korea University at the Novotel Ambassador Hotel in Dongdaemun, Seoul.
This agreement aims for the practical commercialization of AICT applied technology and includes ▲promotion of R&D projects to enhance AI technology completeness and strengthen business competitiveness ▲establishment of the KT-Korea University Joint Research and Development Center for swift and practical collaboration ▲joint use of GPUs for industry-academic research and development.
Seungpil Oh, Vice President and Head of KT’s Technology Innovation Division, and Hyuk Yoo, Vice President for Research at Korea University, will be appointed as co-directors of the Joint Research and Development Center. An advisory committee of six members, three from each side, will be formed to support decision-making necessary for carrying out AI applied technology joint R&D projects.
Open industry-academic cooperation is necessary for companies requiring tangible outcomes and universities needing research innovation amid rapid technological changes. Following this trend, KT and Korea University plan to promote industry-academic linked technology development reflecting the latest research trends to secure technological capabilities and business competitiveness in the AI field.
Key projects selected include the development of Korean-style vertical sLLM (small large language model) technology, Responsible AI (RAI, technology that corrects or deletes information learned that is factually incorrect), and Model of Mixture (MoM, research on optimal search of multiple sLLM models). Technology development will continue steadily until the end of next year.
The Joint Research and Development Center will be established within KT’s U-myeon building as a smart office concept for efficient collaboration. It will create an optimal space for R&D project progress by building personal research spaces, meeting rooms of various sizes, and open communication areas.
In particular, KT will support GPU infrastructure for joint research and development to promote AI industry-academic projects. KT plans to flexibly utilize GPUs according to project characteristics and required timing using its own GPU resources and external infrastructure to improve overall performance and quality of the AI value chain.
Youngseop Kim, CEO of KT, said, "KT will innovate industries and enable customers to experience changes in their lives through practical development cooperation with Korea University. Through this, we will establish our status as an international AICT company and contribute to the development of the Republic of Korea."
Dongwon Kim, President of Korea University, stated, "I hope that by creating a new industry-academic cooperation model suitable for the AI era, we will develop into a company and university that contribute to future society."
