Over 1,000 Students in Namwon, Jeonbuk Show Food Poisoning Symptoms... "Norovirus Found in Kimchi"

Students and Staff Complain of Vomiting, Fever, Diarrhea, and Abdominal Pain

The number of suspected food poisoning cases at schools in the Namwon area of Jeonbuk has increased by more than 800 in three days, surpassing 1,000.


According to Namwon City on the 6th, the number of suspected food poisoning cases at local elementary, middle, and high schools was tentatively counted at 1,024 as of 1 p.m. that day. The number rose by more than 800 from 160 on the morning of the 3rd over three days. The number of schools with suspected cases expanded from 15 to 24.


Students and staff at these schools are reported to be showing symptoms suspected of food poisoning, such as vomiting, fever, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Namwon City has temporarily suspended the manufacturing, distribution, and sale of all products from the supplier after norovirus was detected in kimchi commonly delivered to these schools.


A Namwon City official said, "We plan to conduct additional epidemiological investigations to clearly identify the cause and will make every effort to prevent the spread of food poisoning."
