Gijang-gun to Create 'Life-Respect Safe Village'... 39 Organizations Join Forces

Customized Regional Suicide Prevention Policies

Building a Comprehensive Life Safety Net

Gijang County in Busan (County Governor Jeong Jongbok) announced on the 5th that it had signed a business agreement on the 4th to operate the 'Life Respect Safe Village' and will accelerate the implementation of the project.

The 'Life Respect Safe Village' project aims to contribute to reducing suicides in the local community and provide high-quality suicide prevention services for residents by actively utilizing resources and networks within the town and township areas.

In accordance with the 5th Basic Suicide Prevention Plan (2023-2027), Gijang County and the Gijang County Health Promotion Center will actively implement the project starting this year to strengthen region-specific suicide prevention policies and establish a comprehensive life safety network.

This year, Jeonggwan-eup and Ilgwang-eup have been selected as the first-year project targets for the 'Life Respect Safe Village.' So far, a total of 39 institutions (including police substations, 119 safety centers, welfare centers, hospitals and clinics, schools, apartments, supermarkets, etc.) across six sectors (healthcare, education, welfare, distribution and sales, local community, public services) are expected to participate in the project.

The agreement ceremony was attended by Jeong Jongbok, the governor of Gijang County, and 30 key representatives from participating institutions in Jeonggwan-eup and Ilgwang-eup.

Through this agreement, each institution will engage in five areas of activity: ▲ identifying and connecting high-risk groups ▲ suicide prevention awareness campaigns ▲ life keeper education ▲ customized services for high-risk groups ▲ restricting access to suicide means. In addition, a close cooperation system will be established to build a comprehensive suicide prevention safety network in each town and township and to create villages that realize the value of respecting life.

Jeong Jongbok, the governor of Gijang County, stated, "We will do our utmost to spread a culture of respecting life and make Gijang County a safer place by actively cooperating with local community organizations."

Gijang County plans to expand the project so that all towns and townships in the county will be designated as Life Respect Safe Villages by 2026, starting with Jeonggwan-eup and Ilgwang-eup this year.
