20s Mocking Deceased in Black Clothes Kneeling After Looking Around... 'Caught on CCTV'

Wandering Memorial Space with White Umbrella
Disappeared After Leaving Drinks and Notes

A man in his 20s who left a 'note mocking the victims' at a memorial site near the Seoul City Hall Station reverse-running disaster was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage.

According to CCTV footage released by JTBC on the 5th, a man dressed in black holding a white umbrella appears near the memorial site. He wanders around the memorial area adorned with chrysanthemums while holding the umbrella, then kneels down, leaves something behind, and quickly disappears.

The item left by the man in the video was a bottle of beverage and a note with a written message. The location captured on CCTV matches the spot where the 'victim mocking' memo was found the previous day.

Earlier, on the 3rd, a note containing words mocking the victims of the disaster was left at the memorial site, causing an uproar. The paper read, "Wishing (rest in peace) to the (victims) who have become XXXXX."

After the note's content became known, netizens responded with comments such as "The person who left the mocking note should be caught by reviewing the CCTV," "The victims' families should file a lawsuit," "The police must arrest and ensure justice," and "This shows how sick society has become."

Amid the controversy, the man who left the note reportedly voluntarily appeared at the police station the day before and confessed. The Namdaemun Police Station in Seoul booked a man in his 20s, identified as Mr. A, on charges of defamation of the deceased on the 4th and stated that he is currently under investigation.

It is understood that the man voluntarily appeared at the police after the note he left caused a major controversy online and was reported in the media. The police plan to investigate the detailed motives and circumstances of the crime.

Meanwhile, the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has also reportedly begun a pre-booking investigation into three insulting internet posts related to the incident. The police intend to actively punish acts such as spreading false information and defamation against the victims.
