Yoon Kwongeun: Seeking Effective Solutions
The Daegu City Council's legislative research group, "New Era Hope Forum" (led by Councilor Hwang Sunja), will hold a discussion session on "Improving Daegu's Pet Animal Protection and Welfare Policies" at 2 p.m. on the 3rd floor meeting room of the City Council on the 8th.
This discussion session has been organized in response to the rapid increase in the population raising companion animals, which has led to a rise in conflicts among residents as well as issues such as animal abuse and abandonment, in order to seek Daegu City's response measures.
Councilor Yoon Kwongeun (People Power Party, Dalseo), who proposed the discussion, stated, "We are living in an era with ten million companion animals, and although 140,000 are registered in Daegu, there is still a lack of responsibility and social systems for companion animals." He continued, "Daegu City, animal protection organizations, experts, and citizens must come together to seek effective solutions."
The discussion will begin with a keynote presentation on "The Current Status and Challenges of Animal Welfare" by Lee Hyeongju, head of the Animal Welfare Issues Research Institute.
Following this, Councilor Yoon Kwongeun will serve as the moderator, and panelists will include Chae Iltaek, Director of Strategic Projects at Animal Freedom Coalition; Oh Wisuk, head of Daegu Animal Protection Coalition; Lee Junho, Professor of Companion Animal Health at Suseong University; Park Junseo, President of the Daegu Veterinary Association; Lim Kyuhou, head of Daegu Abandoned Animal Protection Association; and Kim Jongoh, head of Agricultural Distribution at Daegu City.
Meanwhile, Councilor Hwang Sunja (People Power Party, Dalseo), who leads the "New Era Hope Forum," stated, "Every year, about 4,500 animals abandoned in Daegu are admitted to public animal shelters, and more than half of them die naturally or are euthanized." She added, "I hope this discussion will serve as an opportunity to significantly raise the level of animal welfare in Daegu."
