Pukyong National University Selected for Two Fields as the Only University Nationwide for 40 Billion Won Advanced Industry Specialized University Program

Specialized in Secondary Batteries with Geumyang and in Semiconductors with Gyeongsang National University... Fostering Advanced Talent

Pukyong National University (President Jang Youngsoo) was simultaneously selected in two fields, secondary batteries and semiconductors, in the "Advanced Industry Specialized University Support Project" announced by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology on the 4th.

Pukyong National University was chosen as a solo-type university for the "Secondary Battery Specialized University Support Project" and as a co-growth type university for the "Semiconductor Specialized University Support Project" in this initiative, which supports undergraduate talent development at universities?the core foundation for nurturing advanced industry professionals. Pukyong National University is the only university nationwide to be selected in both fields.

With this selection, Pukyong National University will receive intensive financial support of up to 40 billion KRW over four years, enabling the establishment of an advanced talent development system and the expansion of educational infrastructure such as curricula, faculty, and laboratory equipment, thereby strengthening its competitiveness in advanced industries.

As a solo-type university in the "Secondary Battery Specialized University Support Project," the university will receive 12 billion KRW over four years to foster practical, regionally connected specialized talent in the field of "Secondary Battery Process and Material Technology" (Project Leader: Professor Oh Pilgeon). To this end, the university plans to establish Korea's first industry-academia-linked interdisciplinary major, the "Department of Energy Convergence Technology Engineering," in collaboration with Geumyang, a leading company in the secondary battery field.

This department will nurture company-oriented talent through a specialized interdisciplinary curriculum in secondary battery processes and materials, and a specialized local-industry-academia innovation laboratory for secondary batteries is also being established at the Yongdang Campus. Geumyang has pledged to provide 800 million KRW in private matching funds as scholarships.

Additionally, for the "Semiconductor Specialized University Support Project," Pukyong National University was selected under the non-metropolitan co-growth type led by Gyeongsang National University, receiving a total of 28 billion KRW in government funding over four years. Pukyong National University will specialize in "Core Materials and Processes for High-Reliability Semiconductor Packaging" (Project Leader: Professor Lee Jiyeol), while Gyeongsang National University will focus on "Semiconductor Packaging Design and Process, Semiconductor Reliability Analysis" (Project Leader: Professor Kang Seokgeun), with plans to nurture specialized talent in extreme environment semiconductor packaging and testing over the next four years.

Last year, Pukyong National University partnered with Bitugi and OXIDE, companies in the semiconductor sector from Korea and Japan, and earlier this year signed an industry-academia cooperation MOU with DukSan Hi-Metal, a semiconductor packaging materials company. Furthermore, this year the university expanded its Department of Nano Convergence Engineering into the School of Nano Convergence Semiconductor Engineering, establishing new majors in Nano Convergence Engineering and Next-Generation Semiconductor Engineering. Notably, both majors in the School of Nano Convergence Semiconductor Engineering were selected for this project, making it the only university nationwide to achieve this, and are expected to accelerate the development of interdisciplinary talent in advanced fields.
