On the 4th (local time), Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party who secured a landslide victory in the UK general election and has effectively reserved the position of next Prime Minister, stated that voters have changed the country and "the change starts here and now."
According to The Guardian and others, early on the 5th, as the early general election results confirmed his constituency win, Starmer said in his acceptance speech, "We did it."
He emphasized, "Tonight, here and across the UK, people are speaking. They are ready for change." He also said, "This is your democracy, your community, your future," raising his voice, "You voted. Now it is our time to deliver."
Starmer said, "You have changed the country," and that the Labour Party is "ready to serve the country." He also added, "The country comes first, the party comes second. That is the principle."
Earlier, immediately after the polls closed, exit polls projected that the Labour Party would secure a majority with 410 out of 650 seats in the House of Commons, prompting Starmer to thank his supporters. He stated, "I thank everyone who campaigned for Labour in this election, and everyone who voted for us and trusted the changed Labour Party."
The ruling Conservative Party, led by current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, suffered a crushing defeat with 131 seats and is expected to relinquish power. Sunak acknowledged the election loss and said, "I will take responsibility for the result."
If the actual results match the exit polls, Starmer will become the next Prime Minister.
