Gangnam-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) will repair defective overhead cables from this month until the end of the year in collaboration with the Senior Safety Monitoring Team.

The Senior Safety Monitoring is a social service-type job project operated by the Gangnam Senior Club. It consists of 30 residents aged 60 and over, working 60 hours per month. They patrol the streets to inspect hazards related to roads and traffic safety. When they find a hazard, they take photos with their smartphones and file complaints, acting as local guardians.

The district plans to utilize this workforce, which has so far focused on public facilities and traffic safety, for the first time this year to repair defective overhead cables. To this end, on June 26, experts from the Korea Telecommunications Operators Association (KTOA) provided training to the monitoring personnel on inspecting defective overhead cables.

After comprehensively reviewing the patrol inspection items of the monitoring team and 22 community service centers, the district plans to conduct joint repairs with telecommunications companies including KT, SKB, SKT, LGU+, D'Live, Dreamline, and Sejong Telecom.

Since early this year, the district has selected areas with frequent complaints about defective overhead cables and has been promoting focused repairs twice a month with telecommunications operators. As part of the "Pilot Project for Improving Overhead Cable Maintenance Procedures" promoted jointly with the Ministry of Science and ICT, two areas are targeted: the back roads used for commuting to Nonhyeon Elementary School and the commercial district back roads in Yeoksam-dong. The monitoring team will also patrol every corner of these back roads to support focused repairs.

District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong stated, "We expect the meticulous patrol activities of the resident monitoring team to fill gaps where administrative efforts have not reached," and added, "As we enter the summer season with frequent monsoons and typhoons, we will proactively repair defective overhead cables to create a safe city."
