Jungnang-gu Produces 77 Urban Farmers... Urban Agriculture Thrives with Nature and Mind Healing

Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) urban agriculture is becoming more vibrant. On the afternoon of the 4th, the district held the ‘3rd On-site Farmer School (Basic Urban Agriculture Course) Completion Ceremony,’ graduating 30 urban farmers.

The district operates the ‘Jungnang Happiness Urban Agriculture Center,’ offering various educational programs, experiences, and cultural events. Among these, the ‘On-site Farmer School’ is a basic education course where participants can learn fundamental agricultural knowledge and basic farming skills, consistently attracting great interest from residents.

Since last year, a total of 77 graduates have completed the program, and they are currently actively working as instructors for urban agriculture-related programs, including urban agriculture managers, rehabilitation horticulturists, and herbalists.

Additionally, since opening in May at Cheongnam Park in Sinnae-dong, the Jungnang Happiness Urban Agriculture Center has been dedicated to helping residents enjoy happy urban agriculture as its name suggests. The center is a two-story building with a total floor area of 615㎡, equipped with various experiential and educational spaces such as a seed library, experience gardens, and a green kitchen, providing diverse programs.

There are various experiential programs where residents can spend leisure time close to nature, such as the smart farm experience where they pick lettuce grown in the center’s smart farm, and the healing garden cooking class using seasonal ingredients harvested from the garden. So far, about 14,237 residents have participated in urban agriculture programs.

Also, the ‘Jungnang Happiness Farm,’ developed in five locations, is a special healing space where residents cultivate their own gardens and grow crops. Garden plots and pear trees are allocated annually through a lottery, with an average competition rate of 5.9 to 1, demonstrating high popularity. The eco-friendly box gardens, an easy way to enjoy urban agriculture at home, have also been steadily popular, with 11,818 units distributed to date.

Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi said, “We will continue to make steady efforts to revitalize urban agriculture so that residents can find comfort and healing in nature without having to go far from their daily lives.”
