Gwangjin-gu Rolls Up Sleeves to Recycle 100 Tons of Discarded Sewing Fabrics Monthly

Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) will start recycling sewing fabric waste from July. This initiative aims to reduce fabric waste generated during sewing operations and alleviate the disposal burden on sewing companies.

There are approximately 1,200 sewing companies in Gwangjin-gu, and the amount of sewing fabric waste they produced last year reached 1,135 tons (t). Although fabric waste is subject to separate collection for recycling, in reality, it is often buried or incinerated along with general waste, causing serious environmental pollution.

Accordingly, the district will participate in Seoul City's sewing fabric waste recycling project to recycle fabric waste. The collected fabric waste will be disposed of at Seoul City's dedicated sewing fabric waste collection center, where recycling companies will collect it and transform it into intermediate processed products such as auxiliary fuel.

The district will support dedicated sewing fabric bags to encourage participation from local sewing companies and promote separate disposal. The dedicated bags have a capacity of 50ℓ and can be obtained at nearby community service centers. Users should fill in their disposal information when discarding the waste, and if household waste is mixed with the sewing fabric, it will not be collected. For more details, please contact the Cleaning Division of Gwangjin-gu Office.

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “Recycling discarded sewing fabric scraps can reduce about 14% of the waste landfilled annually in our district. We hope for the active interest and participation of sewing workers,” and added, “We will continue to make multifaceted efforts to reduce waste, protect the environment, and promote resource circulation.”
