National Palace Museum to Host International Academic Conference on the 10th
The National Palace Museum of Korea and the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will hold an international academic conference titled "Lost Cultural Heritage, Restoration and Challenges" at 10 a.m. on the 10th in the auditorium of the annex building of the National Palace Museum of Korea. They will share experiences in restoring and utilizing domestic and international cultural heritage damaged by external factors and exchange opinions on future challenges.
The National Palace Museum of Korea is conducting this event in connection with the special augmented reality exhibition "860 Years of History at My Fingertips: Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris," which began on the 2nd. Experts who have restored and utilized cultural heritage damaged or lost due to external factors, such as Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, Sungnyemun Gate, and Shuri Castle in Okinawa, will give presentations and participate in discussions.
In Part 1, "Loss and Restoration of Cultural Heritage," Cho Gyu-hyung, Director of Gyeongbokgung Palace Management Office, will present on the restoration of Sungnyemun Gate, and Atsuki Goki, Director of the Ryukyu Cultural Heritage Research Office at the Okinawa Churashima Foundation, will discuss the reconstruction of Shuri Castle and the future of damaged art and crafts.
In Part 2, "Challenges in Restoration and Utilization of Cultural Heritage," Cho Eun-kyung, Head of the Restoration and Maintenance Division at the Palace and Royal Tombs Headquarters, and Jonathan Truy? from the French Ministry of Culture will take the stage. They will respectively discuss the restoration and utilization of palace architectural heritage and the restoration plan for Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
In Part 3, "Digital Restoration and Utilization of Cultural Heritage," Kang Hyun, Curator at the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, and Raphael March from Histoberry will explain digital restoration of architectural cultural heritage in Korea and the immersive experience through Histopad, respectively.
The following discussion topic will be the restoration and future utilization of cultural heritage. Professor Jeon Bong-hee of Seoul National University will chair the session, where presenters and discussants will freely exchange opinions with the audience. A representative of the National Palace Museum of Korea stated, "Anyone can participate by simply completing the registration process on-site on the day of the event," adding, "We hope that sharing newly utilized cases of world cultural heritage will activate research in related fields."
