"The Responsibility for the Disrupted Speaker Election Lies with the People Power Party Daejeon City Branch...Urgent Measures Needed"
The Progressive Party Daejeon City Branch has called for the return of salaries and an apology to the citizens of Daejeon in relation to the disruption of the Daejeon City Council chairman election.
In a press release on the 4th, the city branch stated, "The failure to elect the chairman for the second half of the 9th council, just like the first time, is due to the power struggle over the distribution of standing committee chairmanships among members of the People Power Party," and emphasized, "All Daejeon city council members who have abandoned the people's livelihood and turned the council into a dysfunctional body must return their salaries and apologize to the citizens of Daejeon."
They continued, "Since 20 out of the 22 Daejeon city council members are affiliated with the People Power Party, the responsibility for this incident lies entirely with the People Power Party Daejeon City Branch," and pointed out, "This is due to the light punishment and complacent measures for failing to fulfill the responsibilities and roles of council members caused by the disruption of the first chairman election."
Furthermore, they warned, "The People Power Party must prepare drastic measures to normalize the Daejeon City Council," and "If the People Power Party does not stop the power struggle and continues to turn the Daejeon City Council into a dysfunctional body, we will launch a campaign for the resignation of Daejeon city council members together with the citizens of Daejeon."
On the morning of the 3rd, the Daejeon City Council held the 280th extraordinary session plenary meeting and conducted the second round of voting for the chairman election, but candidate Kim Seon-gwang failed to secure a majority with 11 votes in favor and 11 invalid votes, the same result as the first round.
Accordingly, the election for the chairman of the second half of the 9th Daejeon City Council must be conducted again after restarting the candidate registration process.
