Launch Ceremony of '6G Society' on the 4th in Yeouido, Seoul
Sharing Trends in Mobile and Satellite Communications and Discussing Collaboration Measures
"We Will Continue to Provide a Platform for Cooperation Between the Two Fields"
The '6G Society,' which strengthens technological exchange and cooperation between the fields of 6G mobile communication and satellite communication, has been launched.
On the morning of the 4th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it held the launch ceremony of the '6G Society' at the Kensington Hotel in Yeouido.
The 6G Society was planned to promote communication between the satellite communication field, an essential technology for 6G, and the 6G mobile communication field. The goal is to collaborate from the technology development stage to develop 6G wireless communication characterized by hyper-connectivity, ultra-low latency, and ultra-spatial capabilities.
Currently, the 6G mobile communication field operates the '6G Forum,' and the satellite communication field operates the 'Satellite Communication Forum' separately. Considering differences in market bases and technical characteristics, both forums continue to operate as before, but the '6G Society,' a consultative body between the two, has been established. This consultative body will share standardization trends in mobile and satellite communications and discuss technology development and linkage plans.
At the launch ceremony, Kim Dae-jung, head of the Korea Information and Communication Technology Association (TTA), shared international trends in 6G standardization. Choi Seong-ho, PM of the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP), presented the current status of 6G mobile communication and low Earth orbit satellite communication technology development.
Additionally, Professor Jang Kyung-hee, executive chairman of the 6G Forum, and Professor Lee Moon-gyu, frequency chairman of the Satellite Communication Forum, introduced the research and development status of 6G and satellite communication, respectively. Afterwards, a free discussion among experts from both fields took place.
Ryu Je-myung, Director of the Network Policy Office at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "To maintain the status of a communication powerhouse in the 6G era, we will strive to actively listen to experts' opinions and reflect them in policies by continuously providing a platform for cooperation between terrestrial mobile communication and satellite communication fields alongside promoting research and development (R&D) projects."
