Haengdang 1(il)-dong Community Center Unveils Garden Featuring Over 30 Plant Species Including Hydrangeas
20 More Sites to Be Developed in Second Half, Expanding Resident Participation Garden Programs to Create a Garden City with Residents
Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jung Won-oh) announced that it has created a colorful "Happiness Garden" where residents can enjoy over 30 different types of plants, including hydrangeas, on the vacant land of Haengdang 1(il)-dong Community Service Center, which had been desolate.
The site at Haengdang-dong 139, where the "Happiness Garden" was established, had been left with discolored rubber mats, giving a bleak impression, and was considered one of the areas in Seongdong-gu in need of improvement through the expansion of living infrastructure.
Accordingly, the district designated the Haengdang-dong 139 site as a pilot project area for the "15-minute city," and began improving living infrastructure such as expanding neighborhood gardens. The "15-minute city" refers to a city where residents can conveniently access cultural, medical, welfare, and leisure facilities within a short distance.
Seongdong-gu is promoting the "5-minute Daily Garden City Seongdong" project this year, expanding gardens throughout the urban area so that residents can enjoy gardens nearby. The newly created "Happiness Garden" is the 10th garden established this year under the "5-minute Daily Garden City Seongdong" project, and an additional 20 gardens are planned to be created in the second half of the year.
Meanwhile, along with creating gardens, the district is actively encouraging residents to participate in gardening. In May, the first group of village gardeners was trained, and the training program for village gardeners will be expanded in the second half of the year.
Gardeners trained through the village gardener education program are expected to participate in garden creation and maintenance through talent donation, and the district plans to further accelerate the realization of the "5-minute Daily Garden City Seongdong" together with residents.
Additionally, Seongdong-gu is promoting various garden projects such as the "Companion Plant Clinic Project" and "Senior-tailored Garden Program" to spread a healthy leisure culture reflecting residents' needs.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, "I hope the '5-minute Daily Garden City Seongdong' project will make residents' lives happier," and added, "We will continue to expand neighborhood gardens so that all residents can enjoy the beauty that gardens bring to daily life."
