On the 2nd (local time), Lloyd Doggett, a Democratic congressman from Texas, became the first federal lawmaker to urge President Biden to withdraw his candidacy, and several other Democratic lawmakers are reportedly preparing to demand his withdrawal.
Major foreign media outlets cited a Democratic aide in the U.S. House of Representatives, reporting that 25 Democratic House members are ready to call for President Biden to step down if he shows signs of faltering in the coming days.
The aide emphasized that Biden’s upcoming ABC interview this week is very important. Lawmakers are also watching to see if President Biden can handle both pre-arranged campaign events and various questions well. President Biden is scheduled to be interviewed by ABC this week and will hold a NATO press conference next week.
On the same day, Doggett, who is serving his 15th term, issued a statement urging President Biden to resign. He is the first sitting Democratic federal lawmaker to publicly mention Biden’s withdrawal from the re-election race. In an interview with NBC News, Doggett expressed hope that other Democratic lawmakers would follow his example.
Democratic Representative Jared Golden of Maine also wrote in a local newspaper on the same day that he had believed for months that former President Donald Trump would win and has now come to terms with that outcome.
Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington said in an interview with a local broadcaster, “We have all seen it, and what has been seen cannot be undone,” adding, “I believe President Biden will lose to former President Trump. I think the damage from that debate has already occurred.”
The U.S. daily Wall Street Journal (WSJ) warned that many lawmakers are heading toward a Democratic defeat following President Biden’s poor debate performance, analyzing that cracks are beginning to form in Democratic unity.
