Enhancing Safe Alleyway Images... Protecting Residents' Safety and Strengthening Crime Prevention Effects
Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) has started an environmental improvement project within the Women’s Safe Return Home Paths to ensure the safe nighttime return of its residents.
The target of this maintenance is the “gobo lighting within the Women’s Safe Return Home Paths,” a design light that projects images and text through lenses onto the ground. It is especially effective at night due to its excellent visibility, providing psychological stability to pedestrians and preventing crime by deterring criminal intent in advance.
In May, the district completed a full inspection of the gobo lights installed within the Women’s Safe Return Home Paths. As a result of the investigation, 13 lights that were malfunctioning due to aging were removed, and 22 lights with weak visibility were completely replaced with designs utilizing Gwanak-gu’s new urban brand, “Republic of Korea Youth Capital Gwanak,” illuminating the dark alleys with a vibrant image of Gwanak.
In July, Gwanak Police Station and the district will conduct joint inspections of areas requiring improved illumination and Women’s Safe Return Home Paths, continuing the environmental improvement project for safe return paths.
Solar marker lights (ground lights with LED bulbs that automatically illuminate when ambient brightness falls below a certain level) will be installed to alleviate the psychological anxiety of residents walking at night and to improve visibility for passing vehicle drivers, thereby ensuring pedestrian safety during nighttime.
Additionally, the district will continue to focus on creating safe return paths by repairing sidewalks such as those on Women’s Safe Return Home Paths and installing additional gobo lights.
Since 2016, the district has managed 22 gobo lights as part of the Gwanak-gu Resident Participatory Budget project, which began with the installation of gobo lights on Women’s Safe Return Home Paths.
The district also operates a Safe Return Home Scout service that accompanies vulnerable groups such as women and youth from their homes. Anyone can use this service by booking through the “Seoul Ansim-i” app, available Monday from 10 PM to midnight, and Tuesday through Friday from 10 PM to 1 AM, excluding weekends and holidays.
Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “I hope the gobo lights using the new urban brand design will brighten the nighttime paths for our residents even more,” and added, “We will strive to create safe return paths where not only women but all Gwanak-gu residents can walk with peace of mind.”
