The Identity of the Man Who Saved a Citizen Collapsed at the Gym and Left

On Day Off, Active Police Officer Saves Patient in Cardiac Arrest at Gym

A Good Samaritan who saved the life of a cardiac arrest patient who collapsed while exercising at a gym and then disappeared was revealed to be an active-duty police officer.

On the 3rd, the YouTube channel 'Seoul Police' uploaded a video titled 'Cardiac arrest patient found during exercise. Life saved by CPR.' The video showed a man, Mr. A, collapsing suddenly to the floor after seemingly slowing down while running on a treadmill at a gym in an apartment complex in Gwangmyeong, Gyeonggi Province, around 9 p.m. on the 6th of last month.

The bystanders appeared stunned as they looked at Mr. A. One person ran to ask the gym staff for help, and another tried to untangle Mr. A’s legs, but no one stepped forward immediately. Meanwhile, foam began to form at Mr. A’s mouth, and his body gradually stiffened.

At that moment, a man exercising behind the gym approached and immediately started performing CPR upon seeing Mr. A. He continued CPR for about seven minutes while talking to 119 emergency services until paramedics arrived. After the paramedics arrived and began emergency treatment, the man quietly left the scene. Thanks to his quick response, Mr. A was safely transported to the hospital and received treatment.

The man who saved the patient in the video was confirmed to be Police Lieutenant Kim Young-bong of the Criminal Investigation Team at Gwanak Police Station. Lieutenant Kim happened to be at the gym on his day off when he witnessed the situation and stepped in to help.

Ten days after the incident, on the 16th of last month, a post titled 'Sincere thanks to Police Officer Kim Young-bong of Gwanak Police Station' was uploaded to the 'Let's Praise' board on the Seoul Gwanak Police Station website. The writer, who identified herself as Mr. A’s wife, stated, "Thanks to Lieutenant Kim’s CPR, my husband’s heart rhythm returned in two minutes, and miraculously, he survived."

She continued, "I don’t know how fortunate it was that the person exercising at the gym was a police officer. Even if my husband had collapsed at home, I might have just been shocked and panicked, unable to do anything." She expressed her gratitude to Lieutenant Kim for saving her husband who collapsed from cardiac arrest, adding, "My husband was hospitalized for 10 days and is now recovering. Thanks to Lieutenant Kim, he is alive and here with me and our children."
